DAHDAH'S DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS

What is Dungeons & Dragons?

Dungeons & Dragons is a Table Top Role Playing Game that started way back in the 80s, where some college kids decided to be the characters from Lord of the Rings instead of reading about them.

D&D has progressed a lot from then (were up to the 5th edition!) but its premise has remained proudly nerdy: pretend to be Orcs and Elves, and roll dice!

At it's heart, D&D is a ridiculous story game. Players decide what their characters look like and how they act, and the Dungeon Master (me) acts as a sort of referee for the imaginary world these characters are in. Relying almost entirely on imagination, the game is far more similar to kids running outside pretending to be their favourite book characters than a videogame, and it is for this reason that kids D&D is becoming increasingly popular! You can imagine (hah) the positive effect D&D has on kids.

The Postive Effects D&D has on Kids

Over the years, I've ran Kids Dungeons and Dragons for family's in Melbourne, Sydney, and rural NSW towns, helping kids come alive through the power of silliness.

Kids have been able to better their reading, mathematics, fine motor skills by drawing up maps, stimulate their imagination, come out of their shell by putting on voices, and develop other emotional skills like empathy, all through DND!

"The skills used in most games like D&D – telling stories, being social, being creative, practicing math, practicing reading – all of those things are really, really helpful for someone struggling with their mental health," - Dr Megan Connell

How I "Kidify" D&D

For the most part, Kids Dungeon and Dragons is largely the same, except for a few minor changes. I'd bore you with the technical rules I change to make gameplay faster and more fun for kids but... well that's boring.

What I've realised over my years of being a Kids DM (Dungeon Master) is that kids have an incredible imagination, that sometimes get whisked away in the world Dungeons and Dragons. As such, I carefully moderate what I put into our imaginary world, making sure it is always more comically than dark: Kids will fight dragons, never demons, should characters die, they have to find a miracle man to bring them back, not a dark necromancer. When DMing for REALLY young kids the subject of death is completely shunted aside (a comical moment I had with one families young kids was whenever a character's health dropped to 0, a portal would open up and transport them to Scotland, where they would spend their time recovering... kids loved it).

BRING KIDS D&D TO YOU!

Hire me for a test run for D&D for your kids, get them to bring their friends, and lets battle some ogres!

I'll bring the board, character sheets, books, dice, and everything else we need, you can sit back and watch your kids grow as they live out their own personal Lord of the Rings.

Watch your kids grow their literacy skills, develop mathematically, engage and stimulate their imagination, develop empathy, and further their acting skills, giggling all the way. And not a screen in sight!
